Ingredients
- whole wheat bread 3 slices
- egg whites 4 large
- skim milk 1/2 cup
- strawberries 1/2 cup
- maple syrup 1 tbsp
- cinnamon 1 tsp
Method
-
Prepare the egg mixture.
In a shallow bowl, whisk together the 4 large egg whites and 1/2 cup of skim milk until fully combined. Add 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and whisk again to distribute evenly.
Tip: Use a wide bowl to easily dip the bread slices. -
Dip the bread slices.
Take each slice of whole wheat bread and dip it into the egg white mixture. Let it soak for about 10 seconds on each side so it absorbs the mixture but doesn’t become too soggy.
Tip: Gently press the bread down to help it soak up the mixture evenly. -
Cook the French toast.
Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Lightly spray or brush with a small amount of oil or butter. Place the soaked bread slices onto the skillet and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through.
Tip: Avoid high heat to prevent burning before the inside cooks. -
Prepare the strawberries.
While the French toast is cooking, wash and slice fresh strawberries to make about 1/2 cup. Set aside for topping.
Tip: Use ripe strawberries for the best natural sweetness. -
Serve and garnish.
Place the cooked French toast slices on plates. Top evenly with the sliced strawberries and drizzle 1 tablespoon of maple syrup over the top. Optionally, sprinkle a little extra cinnamon for garnish.
Tip: Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.
Pro tips
- Use fresh egg whites for fluffier French toast and lower fat content.
- If you like a richer flavor, add a splash of vanilla extract to the egg mixture.
