Ingredients

  • Tuna steak 6 oz
  • Mixed salad greens 2 cups
  • Canned chickpeas 0.5 cup
  • Olive oil 1 tbsp
  • Lemon juice 1 tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

Method

  1. Prepare the Tuna Steak. Pat the tuna steak dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This helps achieve a good sear when grilling. Lightly season both sides with salt and black pepper.
Tip: Drying the tuna well ensures it grills evenly and develops a nice crust.
  2. Preheat the Grill or Grill Pan. Heat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat for about 3 to 5 minutes until it is hot. To test, sprinkle a few drops of water on the surface; they should sizzle and evaporate immediately.
Tip: If using a grill pan, lightly oil it with a paper towel dipped in olive oil to prevent sticking.
  3. Grill the Tuna. Place the tuna steak on the hot grill. Cook for about 3 to 4 minutes on the first side without moving it to create grill marks. Flip carefully and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes for medium-rare. Adjust time if you prefer it more or less cooked.
Tip: Use tongs to flip the tuna gently to keep it intact.
  4. Prepare the Salad. While the tuna is grilling, combine the mixed salad greens and rinsed chickpeas in a large bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat evenly. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper to taste.
Tip: Toss the salad just before serving to keep the greens crisp.
  5. Assemble and Serve. Once the tuna is done, let it rest for 1-2 minutes. Slice the tuna steak into thin strips. Arrange the tuna on top of the salad and serve immediately.
Tip: Resting the tuna helps retain its juices and flavor.

Pro tips

  • Use a meat thermometer if unsure: 125°F (52°C) for medium-rare tuna.
  • If you don’t have a grill, a hot skillet works well to sear the tuna.
