Ingredients

  • Lean ground turkey 120 g
  • Lettuce leaves 2 large leaves
  • Sweet potato 150 g
  • Olive oil 1 tbsp
  • Paprika 0.5 tsp
  • Garlic powder 0.5 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

Method

  1. Prepare the Sweet Potato Fries. Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F). Wash and peel the sweet potato if you prefer, then slice it into even fries about 1cm thick. Place the fries in a bowl and toss with olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, and a pinch of salt. Spread them out in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Tip: Cut fries evenly so they cook at the same rate.
  2. Bake the Sweet Potato Fries. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 20-25 minutes. Halfway through, use a spatula to flip the fries to ensure they crisp evenly on both sides.
Tip: Keep an eye on the fries near the end to prevent burning.
  3. Form the Turkey Patty. While the fries bake, place the lean ground turkey in a bowl. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Gently mix the seasoning into the turkey meat without overworking it. Shape the mixture into a round patty about 1.5cm thick, roughly the size of your palm.
Tip: Handle the meat gently to keep the burger tender.
  4. Cook the Turkey Burger. Heat a non-stick grill pan or skillet over medium heat. Once hot, place the turkey patty on the pan. Cook for about 5-6 minutes on the first side without moving it to get a good sear. Flip the patty and cook for another 5-6 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 74°C (165°F) and the meat is no longer pink inside.
Tip: Use a meat thermometer to ensure the turkey is fully cooked.
  5. Prepare the Lettuce Wrap. While the burger cooks, gently wash and pat dry the lettuce leaves. These will serve as the bun substitute. Once the burger is done, place it on one lettuce leaf and cover with the other leaf, folding or wrapping gently to hold the burger.
Tip: Choose sturdy lettuce leaves like romaine or iceberg to hold the burger well.
  6. Serve. Place the lettuce-wrapped turkey burger on a plate alongside the crispy sweet potato fries. Enjoy your healthy and flavorful meal!
Tip: Serve immediately for the best texture and taste.

Pro tips

  • For extra flavor, add finely chopped onions or herbs like parsley to the turkey mixture before cooking.
  • If you prefer your fries extra crispy, soak the sweet potato slices in cold water for 30 minutes before drying and seasoning.
