Running pace calculator
Distance + time → pace, or pace + distance → finish time — free, no signup.
Running pace is simply how long it takes to cover a unit of distance. This free calculator converts a workout or race time plus distance into minutes per kilometer and per mile—and can reverse the math to estimate finish time from a target pace. No VO2max models and no race-prediction tables.
Time → pace
Enter distance in kilometers or miles and a clock time as h:mm:ss, mm:ss, or plain minutes. We divide total seconds by distance to get seconds per km and per mile, then format them as familiar pace strings (for example 5:00 /km).
Example: 10 km in 50:00 is 5:00 per kilometer and about 8:03 per mile. Use the dual display when you train metric but race on a US course (or the reverse).
Pace → finish time
Switch to reverse mode, enter distance, and type pace as decimal minutes per selected unit (5.0 means five minutes flat). Finish time is pace × distance. Handy for “what if I hold 5:30/km for a half?” sketches without claiming you will hit that split on race day.
What we intentionally skip
We do not estimate VO2max, age-graded scores, or marathon predictors from short time trials. Those models need assumptions this page refuses to invent. Keep training decisions with a coach or a plan; keep this tool for clean arithmetic.
For session energy cost, open the calories burned calculator. For walking volume, try steps to calories. For easy/hard day intensity cues, the target heart rate zones page is a better fit than pace alone.
Practical tips
Warm-up jogs inflate “average pace” if GPS includes them—segment the hard portion when comparing workouts. Treadmill pace is belt speed; outdoor pace includes hills and turns. Consistency of measurement beats chasing a single number.

Frequently asked questions
How is pace calculated?
Pace is total time divided by distance. We show both min/km and min/mile.
What time formats work?
h:mm:ss, mm:ss, or a decimal/minutes number treated as minutes.
Can I use miles?
Yes—choose miles as the distance unit. Pace still shows both per-km and per-mile.
How does finish-time mode work?
Enter pace in minutes per selected unit and your distance; finish time is pace × distance.
Do you predict race times from VO2max?
No. This tool is simple pace math only—no VO2max or race tables.
Is it free?
Yes—no signup. See also calories burned, steps to calories, and target heart rate.
